Leukemia & Lymphoma

Leukemia and lymphoma are common types of blood cancer, each developing differently but significantly impacting the body’s immune and circulatory systems.
At the Cancer Center of Southern California, we provide expert, patient-centered care for chronic leukemias (CLL, CML) and most non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Our oncology team offers same-week appointments and innovative clinical trials, so you feel supported and hopeful, even when standard treatments are limited.

What is Leukemia?
Leukemia begins in the bone marrow and is characterized by the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells that can't function properly and crowd out healthy cells in the bloodstream. This weakens your body’s ability to fight infection, carry oxygen, and control bleeding.
Though leukemia can affect people of all ages, it is more common in adults, particularly men. An unusually high white blood cell count doesn’t always mean leukemia, but persistent elevation requires further investigation to determine the underlying cause.
Types of Leukemia We Treat
We specialize in chronic leukemias, which often progress more slowly than acute forms.
It is the most common type of leukemia in adults over 50. Progresses gradually and requires ongoing monitoring and expert management.
CML is caused by genetic mutations in bone marrow cells. It typically progresses slowly in its early stages but can become more aggressive without treatment.
Symptoms of Leukemia
Chronic leukemias may develop slowly, but possible signs can include:
- Fatigue, weakness, or anemia
- Persistent infections
- Enlarged lymph nodes or spleen
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Night sweats or fevers
- Unexplained weight loss
What is Lymphoma?
Lymphoma begins in the lymphatic system, part of your body’s immune defense. Cancerous lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) multiply and collect in lymph nodes, spleen, or bone marrow, interfering with immune function.
Types of Lymphoma We Treat
We focus on non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL), which are more common than Hodgkin’s lymphoma and include many subtypes.
Progresses gradually, sometimes with few symptoms at first. Monitoring may be recommended until treatment becomes necessary.
Spreads quickly and requires urgent treatment with chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.
Symptoms of Lymphoma
The most common early sign of lymphoma is the painless swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin. Other symptoms may include:
- Fevers and drenching night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue or persistent weakness
- Shortness of breath or cough from pressure on the chest
- Abdominal pain or swelling from enlarged lymph nodes or spleen

Diagnosis of Leukemia & Lymphoma
At the Cancer Center of Southern California, our focus is on confirming the subtype, stage, and genetic profile of the cancer so we can match you with the most effective treatment.
Our evaluation may include:
- Pathology review of biopsy and blood results to confirm accuracy
- Molecular and genetic testing to identify mutations that guide targeted therapy
- Imaging studies (PET, CT, MRI) to assess disease spread
This advanced diagnostic review ensures that your care plan is guided by the latest and most precise information. Based on our assessment, we may identify new treatment options, provide a trusted second opinion, determine your eligibility for clinical trials, or recommend personalized approaches tailored to your specific condition.
Treatment of Leukemia & Lymphoma
At the Cancer Center of Southern California, we believe treatment should be personal, precise, and compassionate. Guided by Dr. Chawla’s decades of research leadership, our team designs care plans based on your cancer type, stage, genetic profile, and overall health.
We may combine established treatments with newer approaches, including:
- Chemotherapy for many types of lymphoma and select leukemias
- Targeted therapy that blocks genetic drivers of cancer growth
- Immunotherapy to help your immune system recognize and fight cancer
- Stem cell transplant in select cases, to restore healthy marrow and blood production
- Radiation therapy for certain localized lymphomas
- Clinical trials, which offer access to promising investigational drugs
